Vegetables Fun Facts & Counting Calories

Vegetables Fun Facts

  • Tomatoes are very high in the carotenoid Lycopene; eating foods with carotenoids can lower your risk of cancer.
  • Other vegetables high in carotenoids are carrots, spinach, sweet potatoes, and collard greens.
  • Most of the nutrients in a potato reside just below the skin layer.
  • A horn worm can eat an entire tomato plant by itself in one day!
  • In the United States, more tomatoes are consumed than any other single fruit or vegetable!
  • California produces almost all of the broccoli sold in the United States.
  • Yams and sweet potatoes are not the same thing!
  • A baked potato (with skin) is a good source of dietary fiber (4 grams).
  • It is recommended that you eat five servings of fruit or vegetables a day. A serving equals one-half cup.
Eat vegetables for a healthy life!

Counting Calories

  • A calorie is a type of measurement that indicates how much energy food gives us.
  • Food labels tell you how many calories a food contains.
  • In general, kids ages 7 to 12 should take in about 2,200 calories each day.
  • Teenage girls should also need about 2,200 calories, while teenage boys require about 2,800.
  • The general recommendation as far as the calorie intake is concerned is that men need about 2700 calories per day and women require about 2000 calories per day.
  • But these recommendations are suggested for average body structure adults, who perform their usual day-to-day activities and do not follow a vigorous workout.

Calories for Fat Loss

Science tells us that 1 pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories, so a daily calorie deficit of 500 should result in 1 pound per week fat loss. In reality things don't quite work that efficiently!

Warning!

Always try to aim for the "Fat Loss" daily calorie level. The "Extreme Fat Loss" level is effectively a rock bottom calorie level. Do not attempt to immediately drop your calories to this level hoping for the quick fix - this may ultimately backfire. The Extreme Fat Loss level is listed to show the lowest calorie amount that could be considered. It should be seen as the exception rather than the rule.

It truly is better to burn the fat than to starve it.

This morning, we were planting vegetables.
The vegetables are chilies, spinach, and parsley.
